Newport Weather and Newport Climate Information
(Newport, Gwent, South Wales, UK)

The city of Newport features typically Welsh weather, with a fairly temperate climate and plenty of summer sunshine. However, much of the weather in the Newport area is fairly changeable and unpredictable, rarely remaining constant for more than several days.

Newport boasts a particularly sheltered spot in southerly Wales and as a direct result, remains protected from the most severe weather. This part of Wales is amongst the sunniest cities in the whole of the United Kingdom and is especially mild, with the climate being influenced by its location alongside the Gulf Stream.

Newport Weather and Climate: Seasonal Variations - Newport, Gwent, South Wales, UK
Summer weather in Newport is predictably hot and sunny, with only occasional heavy showers and a number of intermittent thunderstorms. Thunderstorms are also not unknown during the springtime and these heavy downpours are usually quick to clear.

Temperatures in Newport regularly exceed 20°C / 68°F in the summer months and during the best weather, the temperatures often climb even higher. The climate can feel rather humid and oppressive at this time of year, partly due to the nearby waterfront and the rainfalls. Autumn is usually especially wet and the weather can change from day to day, and even hour to hour. Whilst the daytime temperatures remain fairly mild during September and October, topping 15°C / 59°F on most days, the evenings and nights gradually start to feel noticeable cooler and chilly at times.

By the time that winter arrives, the climate has changed considerably and several snowfalls can be anticipated during this season, often falling at the beginning of the winter months and gain, towards the end. However, snowy weather here is generally short-lived and the snow usually melts straightaway and rarely settles for long. Night-time frosts can be severe at times, although conversely, many winter nights are often surprisingly mild, particularly when the warmer climate of spring is around the corner.
